American Express Sign Up Offers March 2013

by Continental Club on March 25, 2013  |  Leave a comment • Tagged as: , , , ,

American ExpressThe Continental Club blog has run a few articles highlighting particularly notable American Express sign up offers over the past year or so, but we’ve never before published a round-up of all the current promotions.

So, here it is, a quick overview of the company’s current new cardmember deals, covering American Express house-branded and co-branded cards. House-branded cards offer frequent travellers the flexibility of being able to earn Membership Rewards, which can then be converted into a wide range of hotel and airline loyalty scheme currencies. Co-branded cards earn points or miles directly into the co-brand’s scheme.

Card Card Type Loyalty Currency Sign-Up Bonus
The Platinum Card Charge Membership Rewards 30,000 New!
The Preferred Rewards Gold Card Charge Membership Rewards 20,000
British Airways American Express Prem Plus Card Credit Avios 18,000
British Airways American Express Credit Card Credit Avios 3,000
The Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card Credit Starpoints 10,000
The Nectar Credit Card Credit Nectar Points 5,000
The Platinum Business Card Charge Membership Rewards 60,000
The Gold Business Card Charge Membership Rewards 40,000
The Nectar Business Credit Card Credit Nectar Points n/a
The American Express Corporate Card Charge Membership Rewards n/a

All of the above offers are currently scheduled to last until the end of March at least, which is probably in part a reflection of the ‘middling’ levels of sign-up bonus – compared to some recent offers – for the personal cards listed. The Platinum Card bonus has just launched a 30,000 Membership Rewards for eligible applicants who spend £2,000 on their new card in the first 3 months of membership, which replaces a zero-bonus situation in recent weeks. It is however lower than the 52,000 MRs offered earlier in the year. To balance things, there has never been a higher bonus that that attached currently to The Platinum Business Card.

American Express Platinum Card: 50,000 Membership Rewards January Sign Up Bonus

by Continental Club on January 14, 2013  |  Leave a comment

The most generous sign-up bonus offered by American Express in recent times is back (we last wrote about it in August 2012): successful applicants for the Platinum charge card who spend £2,000 in the first three months of card-holding will earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points, on top of one MR point for almost every full £1 spent on the card.

American Express Platinum New

It’s not only one of the most rewarding American Express offers that we’ve ever seen – it’s also arguably the leading offer amongst all the travel-relevant card products in the UK market at present.

On the high street, the sign-up bonus is worth £200 at Harvey Nichols (with 10,000 points left over), but it’s in the air that the value can really be found. 50,000 Membership Rewards equates to 50,000 Avios – the currency of the British Airways Executive Club, or 50,000 Virgin Flying Club miles. That’s enough, subject to availability, for two round-trip upgrades from Premium Economy to Business Class between the UK and the USA on either carrier.

There is no extended credit facility with the card (charge card balances must be settled in full at each statement) and there’s an annual fee of £450, but cardholders also benefit from such perks as complimentary Priority Pass membership, family travel insurance, and automatic high-level status in the Starwood, Accor, Carlson, Hertz and Avis loyalty programmes. The latter, in Continental Club’s experience (we’ve been cardmembers since 1998), result in useful upgrades to many hotel and car rental bookings. as well as enhanced points-earning rates in those programmes as well.

American Express New Cardmember Travel Sign Up Offers Update August 2012

by Continental Club on August 23, 2012  |  One comment

Two offers from American Express that Continental Club flagged up back in July have been extended but are close to finally coming to an end – so now looks like the last chance to be in with the opportunity to earn some of the biggest joining/spend bonuses that we’ve seen for a while.

The deadline is closest for applications for their Platinum Charge Card, which ends on 27th August 2012. Successful ‘virgin’ applicants – that is those who have never had any kind of American Express product in the past – who spend a minimum of £2000 in the first three months of card membership, can look forward to a joining bonus of 50,000 of the issuer’s generic ‘Membership Rewards’ points. The points can then be redeemed for a wide range of products and services, including airline mileage.

50,000 Membership Rewards therefore equates to 50,000 Avios, or 50,000 Virgin Flying Club miles, and though there is no extended credit facility (charge card balances must be settled in full at each statement) and the annual fee of £450 is higher than the BA credit card (below), some travellers may value such perks as Priority Pass membership, travel insurance, and automatic status in the Starwood, Accor, Carlson, Hertz and Avis loyalty programmes.

Meanwhile, members of the British Airways Executive Club who didn’t apply for the BA American Express Premium Plus credit card during July’s bumper 30,000 Avios promotion may still be tempted by the card giant’s latest sign-up offer, valid for applications made by 12th September 2012.

Once accepted as a new British Airways American Express Premium Plus cardmember, a welcome bonus of 18,000 Avios is the reward for spending a minimum of £3,000 in the first three months of membership. The welcome bonus is in addition to the normal benefits of up to 3 Avios per £ spent, and an Avios ‘companion voucher’ when £10,000 is charged to the card account in a membership year.

American Express is marketing the bonus as being worth two return flights to Berlin from the UK.  A raft of changes to the British Airways loyalty programme in 2011 mean that additional taxes, fees and charges on reward flights are now capped at £27 per person return in Economy and £34 per person return in Business – for members with what the airline describes as ‘recently active’ accounts.

Non Executive Club members can also apply for the card, with a new Executive Club account automatically established upon acceptance.

The card comes with an annual fee of £150, which is taken into account when calculating the ‘example’ interest rate; applicants should of course take the opportunity to read the terms and conditions of any card membership carefully.
