The Flights of The Uglybus

by Continental Club on June 13, 2010  |  One comment

Nine months ago, it was all about the baby; today it’s the turn of the grand-daddy of the current Airbus range to strut its stuff. So, welcome on board the SuperJumbo; the WhaleJet; the Uglybus: the A380-800. Although the first of its type entered commercial service on the 25 October 2007 with Singapore Airlines, only now in mid 2010 are deliveries accelerating and carriers are beginning to offer multiple route choices and frequencies. The latest to receive its first example is German flag-carrier Lufthansa; Singapore Airlines’ cohort now out-numbers the size of its operational Boeing 747-400 fleet, Qantas offer service on both Trans-Pacific and ‘Kangaroo’ routes, and Emirates have just signed an order which will ultimately see their livery on 90 examples of the type.

The Prologue

by Continental Club on June 13, 2010  |  Leave a comment

It’s usually the case that a Welcome on Board prologue sets the scene. Indeed, in come circumstances, it may even serve to justify the premise for the trip that is about to be described.

Not in this case though, for most of sound mind would likely question the lucidity of anyone who would take a two-day trip to Europe for the sole purpose of spending just over an hour coming (part of the way) back on board a double-decker Dumbo look-alike.

Luckily, it’s most unlikely that anyone of sound mind will be reading this and so, thankfully, any explanation of why this may have been a considered, well-judged, critically-assessed trip is almost certainly quite superfluous.

Instead, Top Gear-style logic prevails and, an hour after Air France issue their press release that the A380 will be undertaking Summer weekend flights between Paris and London, the bookings are confirmed through Orbitz (one bit of logic there – ticketing in the USA was cheaper than in the UK or France) and FatherContinentalclub is issued with instructions that he will be accompanying your narrator to Roissy for no apparent reason other than, in longhaul, widebody, upper-decked, business class comfort, to come back again.

I could hear his eyes rolling on the ‘phone.

Paris Charles de Gaulle to London Heathrow – Air France

by Continental Club on June 12, 2010  |  Leave a comment

It’s funny what you remember about an airline. Initially, I thought that it was many years since I’d flown with Air France. I tried to remember where it had been between, but I couldn’t. All I could remember was that I hadn’t been all that impressed and that something hadn’t tasted right.

As the excitement about sampling the airline’s Affaires (business class) service on board its latest, newest and now flagship aircraft grew, the fog lifted and the recollection became clear:

I hadn’t actually flown with them at all.
