American Express New Cardmember Travel Sign Up Offers Update August 2012

by Continental Club on August 23, 2012

Two offers from American Express that Continental Club flagged up back in July have been extended but are close to finally coming to an end – so now looks like the last chance to be in with the opportunity to earn some of the biggest joining/spend bonuses that we’ve seen for a while.

The deadline is closest for applications for their Platinum Charge Card, which ends on 27th August 2012. Successful ‘virgin’ applicants – that is those who have never had any kind of American Express product in the past – who spend a minimum of £2000 in the first three months of card membership, can look forward to a joining bonus of 50,000 of the issuer’s generic ‘Membership Rewards’ points. The points can then be redeemed for a wide range of products and services, including airline mileage.

50,000 Membership Rewards therefore equates to 50,000 Avios, or 50,000 Virgin Flying Club miles, and though there is no extended credit facility (charge card balances must be settled in full at each statement) and the annual fee of £450 is higher than the BA credit card (below), some travellers may value such perks as Priority Pass membership, travel insurance, and automatic status in the Starwood, Accor, Carlson, Hertz and Avis loyalty programmes.

Meanwhile, members of the British Airways Executive Club who didn’t apply for the BA American Express Premium Plus credit card during July’s bumper 30,000 Avios promotion may still be tempted by the card giant’s latest sign-up offer, valid for applications made by 12th September 2012.

Once accepted as a new British Airways American Express Premium Plus cardmember, a welcome bonus of 18,000 Avios is the reward for spending a minimum of £3,000 in the first three months of membership. The welcome bonus is in addition to the normal benefits of up to 3 Avios per £ spent, and an Avios ‘companion voucher’ when £10,000 is charged to the card account in a membership year.

American Express is marketing the bonus as being worth two return flights to Berlin from the UK.  A raft of changes to the British Airways loyalty programme in 2011 mean that additional taxes, fees and charges on reward flights are now capped at £27 per person return in Economy and £34 per person return in Business – for members with what the airline describes as ‘recently active’ accounts.

Non Executive Club members can also apply for the card, with a new Executive Club account automatically established upon acceptance.

The card comes with an annual fee of £150, which is taken into account when calculating the ‘example’ interest rate; applicants should of course take the opportunity to read the terms and conditions of any card membership carefully.
