American Express Platinum Card: 50,000 Membership Rewards January Sign Up Bonus

by Continental Club on January 14, 2013

The most generous sign-up bonus offered by American Express in recent times is back (we last wrote about it in August 2012): successful applicants for the Platinum charge card who spend £2,000 in the first three months of card-holding will earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points, on top of one MR point for almost every full £1 spent on the card.

American Express Platinum New

It’s not only one of the most rewarding American Express offers that we’ve ever seen – it’s also arguably the leading offer amongst all the travel-relevant card products in the UK market at present.

On the high street, the sign-up bonus is worth £200 at Harvey Nichols (with 10,000 points left over), but it’s in the air that the value can really be found. 50,000 Membership Rewards equates to 50,000 Avios – the currency of the British Airways Executive Club, or 50,000 Virgin Flying Club miles. That’s enough, subject to availability, for two round-trip upgrades from Premium Economy to Business Class between the UK and the USA on either carrier.

There is no extended credit facility with the card (charge card balances must be settled in full at each statement) and there’s an annual fee of £450, but cardholders also benefit from such perks as complimentary Priority Pass membership, family travel insurance, and automatic high-level status in the Starwood, Accor, Carlson, Hertz and Avis loyalty programmes. The latter, in Continental Club’s experience (we’ve been cardmembers since 1998), result in useful upgrades to many hotel and car rental bookings. as well as enhanced points-earning rates in those programmes as well.
