British Airways Introduce Deposit Option For ‘Flight Plus’ Packages

by Continental Club on October 4, 2012

Along with many other online travel providers, British Airways offers customers the opportunity to combine flights with other trip components including hotel accommodation and car rental.

The resultant ‘dynamic packages’ benefit from ATOL protection, unlike those trips whose components are booked separately. However, with few exceptions, one of the continuing advantages of booking with a traditional holiday ‘package’ provider was the ability to pay a deposit to hold the booking, with the balance due closer to departure.

BA have now taken the decision to offer a deposit option too, with levels starting at £150 for Summer 2013 packages costing up to £999. Deposits on trips costing £1000 or more are from £300, with balances due in all cases 10 weeks prior to departure.

It’s not yet clear how this will affect the existing opportunities to upgrade flights with Avios or pay to select preferred seating etc., and whether these will be available once the deposit is paid or only when the balance is settled. We’ll report back as soon as we have news on the finer points. In the meantime there’s definitely the opportunity to combine both this new deposit option and the airline’s ongoing bonus Avios offer for members of its Executive Club booking dynamic packages whilst logged-into their online accounts.

And, for the most avid Avios collectors, the normal earning rates for flights taken as part of a package remain, as well as up to 3 Avios per £ spent when using a British Airways Premium Plus American Express card.
